Network mix new shows, cost-cutting to weather hard times
GMA Network Senior Vice-President for entertainment TV Wilma V. Galvante admitted that GMA’s TV production was feeling the pinch.
Advertising revenues, she said, have not been as favorable as expected since the last quarter of 2008, prompting the network to implement cost-cutting measures and ensure that programs keep to allotted budgets.
“We will have no increases in production budgets this year,” Ms. Galvante said. “We were told that if we can, we should reduce [budgets] this year.”

GMA Network Inc. on Thursday reported a slower growth net profit last year as the impact of the US financial crisis began to hurt the Philippines in the fourth quarter.
The broadcasting network said its net profit grew 3 percent to P2.37 billion last year from P2.31 billion in 2007.
The company’s net profit growth was weaker compared with the 19 percent growth in 2007 as against year 2006.
Despite the increase, however, ad revenues were expected to remain flat or show little improvement, Gozon said.
GMA NETWORK SUFFERS DECLINE IN ADVERTISING LOADS
Gozon added that advertising spending from January to March is not that “bad” but there is a reduction on advertising load.
From January to March 19, the company’s advertising minutes dropped by 3 percent to 58,957 minutes from 60,643 minutes.
GMA expects flat revenues this year

Felipe Gozon, GMA Network chairman, said ad revenues would be flattish if not contract this year. Given the expected slowdown in advertising volumes, the company plans to hike rates.
The executive said advertising revenues may be “flat or a little higher” this year, even as the company looks for ways to cut costs.
